benedikt frey crafts a musical aesthetic that (much like the esp institute) might only be seen in its true form from a birds-eye view�a whole greater than the sum of its parts. his playful indifference to genre specifics and pre-prescribed instrumentation or production techniques makes for a loose and refreshing collection of work, and this debut for the esp institute, the lobbyist, serves up an incongruous three tracks so bewildering and narcotic we�re already impatiently fiending for more. on side a, the title track is no less than a medieval assault. led by a stomping war drum and a blasting bass synth that might literally have caught the studio on fire, an erratic array of clanking percussion, hi-hats and cymbals push us into a sinister corner where his whispering chant grants us the smallest bit of humanity before continuing with the beating. on side b, cupids delight (ft tcb) and gravel both explore variations on beauty�the former in a blur of ghost-like vocals smeared in harmony across a low-slung machine drums, and the latter evoking a tropical affair gone psychedelic, complete with drawn-out disorienting marimba and ritual clave/tom arrangements. welcome home brother benedikt, what took you so long?

mark e last delivered on futureboogie back in november 2014, so it�s a welcome return to the label for the birmingham based dj & producer. with his merc imprint running on full steam, and previous releases on revered labels like spectral sound and running back, mark is becoming an ever dependent exponent of the real and raw house music vibe, and no more so than on the basement trax ep. basement trax 1, distorted synths wander over a low-slung beat, the marching hi-hats and filter work are tweaked to perfection. it�s a track of basic elements, but done so well, the arrangement building steadily and bags of warmth and soul deep at the heart of this track. the gnarly bass and classic string sounds of basement trax 2 make an ideal companion piece to the a side. delivered in the finest wild-pitch tradition, the raw sounding production packs a punch as the stomping drums and repetitive keys ramp up the heat for a real blazer of an underground club cut.

this is the second record of the modern house quintet, a french band who makes house music. like the former release, this new one features two house/deep house tracks: * marmande* starts with a lush pad and staccato bassline soon joined by percussions and an organ chord. the second part of the track introduces gradually a flute line plus a powerful open hi-hat. * bellevue* opens with a pad and a filtered rhodes synth supported by a low-fi bassline. that structure evolves step by step until the break introduces strong open hit-hats followed by another flute line.
